SMP Match Of The Day

Last Friday staff from SMP LTD were involved in a legendary battle of skills and stamina in a…… 5-A-Side football match.

The match took place on the all weather pitch at Ribby Hall Village in Wrea Green. In this team bonding exercise volunteers from all departments within the company made up the 2 teams.

Many thanks to all that took part in this first “Match of the Day”. I’m sure we all agree that a great time was had by all (despite the weather!).

We hope to have another match very soon, perhaps with awards for Best Player / Best Dive, etc.

1800mm Deck Decompression Chambers DDC

Over the last few years we have seen the increase in popularity of larger diameter Deck Decompression Chambers (DDC’s). Initially any enquiries for chambers larger than 1500mm (60 inches) would have exclusively come from the Scandinavian region but now we are finding that diving contractors from all over the globe are showing interest in our 1800mm (72 inches) chamber. IMCA have recently revised their D023 guidelines:

” Any chamber manufactured after 1 January 2015 should have a minimum internal diameter of 60 inches if using imperial measurements or 1500mm if using metric measurements. Chambers manufactured before this date do not need to meet this size requirement. “

But for some people bigger is better.
Diver Decompression Chambers

Due to the increase in demand we at SMP now stock 1800mm DDC shells at our Preston workshop ready to fit out. This greatly reduces project build times for our customers. We supply the chambers as free-standing units but more commonly as containerised systems ready to deploy anywhere in the world. We have standard designs like the example shown below which fit into 20 foot ISO containers to keep mobilisation and shipping costs to a minimum. We also produce bespoke systems and our sales and design teams are on hand to consult with clients to produce high quality solutions, supplying computer generated realistic views of the systems prior to build.

Diver Decompression Chambers

Our DDC shells are built in the UK to the design code PD5500 : 2009 CAT1 and are certified by Lloyds Register of Shipping and they have a depth rating of 100 Metres.

All of our diving systems are designed to meet and exceed IMCA safety standards for offshore use.

Please contact our sales team for further information.

NEW PRODUCTS: Wet Bell Launch And Recovery Systems (LARS)

NEW PRODUCTS!!
WET BELL LAUNCH AND RECOVERY SYSTEMS (LARS)

We are pleased to announce the introduction to the market of two new products.

1. Wet Bell Launch And Recovery System With Control Cabin & Mixed Gas Panel
2. Wet Bell Launch And Recovery System

Our Launch And Recovery System (LARS) products have been designed and developed in-house and will be manufactured at our factory in the UK. As with all SMP products, we only use premium materials and highly skilled personnel to enable us to build the best quality final product for our customers.

The SMP Wet Bell LARS is designed within a compact operating footprint to minimise the required operational deck space on board a vessel or barge. Emphasis has been placed on ease of mobilisation and demobilisation, so that costs are kept to a minimum.

The Wet Bell LARS is IMCA D023 and D018 compliant and has Third Party Design approval to Lloyds Rules for Lifting Appliances in a Marine Environment.

When fully retracted by the hydraulic cylinders, with the wet bell and clump weight stowed on the heavy duty based skid, the size and dimensions of the Wet Bell System is comparable in width to an ISO 20’ container, but is approximately 2.0 meters shorter. The heavy duty based skid has ISO corner castings situated on each corner so that the system can be located on conventional twist locks with 6 additional welded deck fastening points for the attachment of bolted sacrificial deck fixing plates, which are provided with each system.

The Wet Bell has a transparent top acrylic dome for 360 degree visibility during diver transit to depth. The Wet Bell can be supplied as a 2 or 3 diver unit to suit the customer’s operational requirements.

The Wet Bell System is outfitted with two manriding hydraulic winches for deployment and recovery of the Wet Bell and Clump Weight during normal operation. The clump weight winch can recover the Wet Bell in an emergency situation.

The two 30kW independent hydraulic power units (HPU) are sized to ensure the units are never running at full load conditions, thus extending the life of the HPU. The units are outfitted with premium sized oil reservoirs for safe operation in higher ambient temperatures, with seawater oil coolers fitted as standard. The hydraulic interconnecting piping and fittings from the HPU to the winches and hydraulic cylinders are all 316 Stainless Steel.

The hydraulic cylinders are of heavy duty construction with Stainless Steel cylinder rods fully chrome plated. The cylinders are fitted with counterbalance valves for safety during operation in the event of pressure loss at the cylinder or piping.

With every unit sold you can be sure of SMP’s full technical support, from our team of highly experienced designers, engineers and technicians.

Transfer Under Pressure (TUP) Diving System

We are offering for sale a Transfer Under Pressure (TUP) Diving System.
The TUP Diving System is a Closed Bell Diving System, designed and manufactured by SMP Ltd.

It is certified in accordance with International Maritime Contractors Association (IMCA) guidelines and codes of practice for offshore diving operations and certified by Lloyds Register of Shipping.

This compact modular system consists of a 3 man 4.7m3 saturation diving bell, diver’s gas control panels (air/mixed gas), main Bell/Diver control panel, twin lock decompression chamber, single lock decompression chamber (optional), HP and LP compressors, gantry launch and recovery system.

The system is equipped for air diving and mixed gas diving and the clump weight also incorporates a tool basket for the divers. A hyperbaric floataway chamber is optional.

The Diving System is a mobile and modular system that can be mobilised on a DPII support vessel, platform, rig or construction barge. The system is designed for moonpool or over the side operations. Using Trimix or Nitrox gas mixtures will allow longer duration in-water bottom time at greater depths than using air diving techniques which cause longer in-water and decompression practices.

By providing a closed bell system the divers are transferred in a protected environment. Safety is increased by removing the threat of Nitrogen intoxication. This is achieved by making sure at no point is the diver exposed to atmospheric pressure during decompression.

The benefits are clear to see and it is the way forward in today’s demanding market for deep air diving operations and continual surface mixed gas operations.

Safe No surface decompression interval, protected transfer to and from the splashzone
Proven An enhanced proven solution that increases workable bottom time
Future Proof Upgradeable to Saturation Diving Capability (Future Proof Capability)
Cost Effective The system provides cost effectiveness through increased bottom times for the divers
Mobile This modular system can be easily transported and mobilised in 24 hours providing fast turnaround for offshore operations on any suitable vessel

There is also the capability for one dive team to be in decompression whilst a second dive team commence diving operations which means less down time on jobs.

SMP Apprentice meets British Prime Minister David Cameron

Matthew Thompson (far right) with Mark Menzies and David Cameron

Matthew Thompson, an Electrical Engineering Apprentice at Submarine Manufacturing and Products (SMP Ltd) last week met with British Prime Minister, David Cameron and Fylde MP, Mark Menzies at BAE Systems in Warton, Lancashire.

The Prime Minister was visiting the North of England to highlight the importance of apprenticeships as a career-choice and as a means of sustaining and developing the UK skills base. While in Warton, David Cameron and Mark Menzies launched a new £15.6m Lancashire training academy for Degree Apprenticeship schemes.

Mr Cameron stated “I want young people to have the chance to learn a skill and that is why the government has put 1.5bn pounds extra into the apprentices system and we want to see that grow.”

David Cameron talking to apprentices including Matthew Thompson.

More than 300 apprentices from companies across the North West were in attendance. One of our apprentices, Matthew Thompson (pictured with Mr Cameron and Mr Menzies) had the opportunity to individually discuss his apprenticeship with Mr Cameron and leading executives from BAE Systems.

SMP Ltd is currently training 5 apprentices at its premises in Newton, near Preston.
