The Hyperbaric Life Support Package (LSP) is a fully transportable self contained unit, suitable for use in remote locations as a basic shore based reception facility. The LSP is equipped with the essential services required to support a Self Propelled Hyperbaric Lifeboat (SPHL) or Hyperbaric Rescue Chamber (HRC) following emergency evacuation from the Mother Vessel Saturation Diving Complex.

Alternatively the LSP could be located offshore on a field supply vessel or other structure capable of handling both the LSP and the SPHL or HRC in evacuation mode. This is subject to the required support services being available at the offshore location to enable operational use of the LSP.

The LSP equipment is built into a 20ft x 8ft DNV 2.7-1 Certified Offshore Container, which is utilised as a safe means of transport, storage and protection of the inbuilt equipment. The container is provided with 4 x top corner castings with 4 x combined certified top lift padeyes and a certified lifting sling set for handling purposes. In addition the base section of the container is provided with fully enclosed forklift pockets for transport, loading purposes and dockside handling and 4 x bottom corner castings suitable for shipping or stacking in a standard container configuration.

The container is equipped with double opening waterproof doors at one end. A personnel door for access into the life support control compartment is provided which can be opened both internal and external in an emergency. Ventilation louvers are provided within the machinery compartment bulkhead walls, all the louvers are fitted with external hinged opening storm doors for security.

The primary concern when utilising the LSP other than as a means to monitor and control the chamber life support gases and chamber depth, is to provide sufficient cooling / dehumidification fluid medium to supply the SPHL Chamber and /  or the HRC internal Habitat Conditioning Units (HCU’s), especially in geographic areas where tropical conditions exist.

The heat & ensuing humidity generated by the SPHL Chamber occupants, coupled with the high ambient temperatures experienced under tropical conditions can be significant. The LSP is therefore outfitted with independent primary and secondary twin Chiller systems.

The issue of heating the chamber internals was not normally considered, as the occupants would be provided with the necessary survival packs containing thermal suits as part of the SPHL / HRC inventory, in order to comply with IMCA requirements.

The latest Inspection Guidance Notes: IMCA D052 Dated May 2013 Hyperbaric Evacuation Systems Section 5.4 Life Support Package and IMCA D024 Rev 2 Dated July 2014 Section 16 Life Support Package indicate dedicated independent primary and secondary Heating systems are required to give 100% redundancy in the event of failure of the primary unit.

The LSP Offshore Container is outfitted internally with insulated bulkheads, dividing the LSP into specific fully insulated sections. As follows:

  • Life Support Section CW Life Support Control Panel and Air Conditioning Unit)
  • Machinery Section CW Twin Air Cooled Liquid Chillers, Twin Heating System, Umbilical Storage reel, HP Heliox Mixed Gas & Oxygen Gas Storage Section.
  • DNV 2.7-1 Offshore 20ft Containerised Life Support Package. Standard Colour International Orange RAL 2004.
