Damen Multipurpose Support Ship Adds Submarine Rescue Capability

The Damen Multipurpose Support Ship (MPSS) made a significant impact on the market upon its launch in spring 2024. Co-developed with the Portuguese Navy, the MPSS is a next-generation vessel designed to support modern naval operations, with a particular focus on at-sea drone deployment and autonomous systems. However, as a multipurpose platform, its capabilities extend far beyond that which is where SMP comes in.

Recognising the vessel’s versatility, a wide range of potential roles were identified, including amphibious support, emergency and disaster relief, search and rescue, diving support operations, submarine rescue missions, and helicopter operations. Given the increasing need for effective submarine rescue capabilities worldwide, SMP was selected as the Submarine Rescue Capability Partner, bringing their expertise in subsea systems to the MPSS platform.

In collaboration with Damen, SMP developed multiple equipment layouts, all of which are integrated beneath the flight deck. This successful integration includes the handling system, rescue vehicle, and decompression system, all seamlessly positioned at the vessel's aft section.

By ensuring compatibility with SMP’s 50-person SRV-F rescue vehicle, Damen and SMP have created a unique, multirole naval asset well-suited for navies operating conventional submarines in coastal waters. Additionally, the MPSS offers interoperability with existing rescue vehicles, allowing for rapid deployment and recovery when required.

Damen has been at the forefront of specialized ship design and construction since 1927, catering to offshore markets and naval clients with cutting-edge maritime solutions. Meanwhile, SMP has been a leader in the development of specialist subsea equipment since 1985, continuously innovating in the field of underwater rescue and intervention.

The collaboration between Damen and SMP brings together nearly a century of shipbuilding excellence and decades of subsea expertise. This synergy has resulted in a vessel that enhances maritime security, operational flexibility, and submarine rescue preparedness.
